UNIT SIX: COLONIZATION
Essential question: Between 1607 and 1763, North American colonists developed experience in, and the expectation of, self-government in the political, religious, economic, and social aspects of their lives. How did this happen?
Focus Questions for this unit:
Core Curriculum
Curriculum of Connections
Curriculum of Practice
Curriculum of Identity
Overview:
The colonial experience in North America is a powerful conflict between man and nature. The desire to seek a new life or build a "new world" is a motivating factor behind the risk taking and struggle related to carving out an existence in the wilderness. Some came here to avoid religious persecution, some to seek wealth and fortune, others were brought here against their will. The story of their adventure is compelling.
In this massive unit, we will examine the development of the three distinct colonial regions. We will uncover their motives and mark their progress as they build a society in the "new" world that in some cases, is very much like the "old" world. We will also look at those innovators who created a very different society for the inhabitants.
From a personal perspective, students will be asked to take the role of colonists and face the problems and challenges faced by the original settlers.
